Frances H. Wollrab

07 July 1920-12 January 2018

Frances Louise Helmer Wollrab, 97, of Bloomington, passed away peacefully Friday (Jan. 12, 2018) with her family at her side. She had been at Heritage Health, Normal, since June 2017.

A celebration of life will be scheduled by her family at a later date.

Frances was born July 7, 1920, in Jackson, Tenn., to Adrian Edward and Ione Fite Helmer. She had two siblings who predeceased her, James Helmer and Elizabeth Helmer Clark. Her family moved to Piedmont, Calif., when she was very young, where she graduated from Piedmont High School and attended the University of California at Berkeley. She had many fond memories of her childhood that she often shared with her children and friends.

During World War II Fran met her husband, James Culver Wollrab, in San Francisco, Calif. They were married Oct. 19, 1943, in Bloomington. After his service in the U.S. Navy, they lived for two years in Champaign while he attended law school after which they moved back to Bloomington and raised six children together. Jim passed away Jan. 1, 1989.

Surviving are their children, James Wollrab Jr., Boulder, Colo.; Vicki (Don) Marvel, Eugene, Ore.; Fred (Deb) Wollrab, Bloomington; Wendy (Mark) Bardwell, Bloomington; John (Laurie) Wollrab, Normal; and Bill (Vera) Wollrab, San Luis Obispo, Calif.; nine grandchildren, Anne Marvel Chrisman, Jason Marvel, Wendy Wollrab, Jamie Wollrab, Brandyn Wollrab, Tom Bardwell, John Bardwell, Alan Bardwell and Summer Wollrab; and 15 great-grandchildren.

Fran had many diverse interests and hobbies and was even a bit of an entrepreneur. She loved collecting antiques and owned a small antique shop for a brief time. She also had a small business called American Kraft that made the “Dolly Dress Rack” which was sold in Marshall Fields and local toy shops. She enjoyed reading and shared that love with her children. Over the years she enjoyed dabbling in art and photography, traveling with family and friends, volunteering at the Community Players Theater and sharing her cottage in Macatawa, Mich., and her home in Carmel Valley. Fran was able to make several trips to Europe using her membership with the international home exchange program. She truly enjoyed adventures which took her to the backroads and off the beaten path. One of her favorite travel adventures was with her husband when they traveled to Bloomington’s sister city in Asahikawa, Japan, as part of the sister city program. Fran was also a member of the Bloomington Art Association and the Antiquarian club for many years.

Frances can be remembered as generous and caring. After World War II, she and Jim sponsored a Russian prima ballerina and her family through the Refugee Relief Program. They assisted her in setting up a ballet program, beginning in their home and then moving her business to a studio in downtown Bloomington. One of her favorite verses of poetry was “help thy brother’s boat to cross and lo thy own shall reach the shore.” Thank you, Frannie.

Gregory Scott Hinton

05 June 1952-07 May 2017

Gregory Scott Hinton
(fondly referred to by friends as “Mailman”)

Greg was deeply loved and respected as a husband, father, brother, grandfather, uncle and friend.

He was a proud graduate of Valparaiso University receiving two degrees, one in political science and the other in geography, class of 1974.

After working for the I.R.S. for a brief period he then transferred to the U.S.P.S. where he continued to serve as a dedicated mail carrier in LeRoy, IL for many years.

He then enjoyed his retirement where Greg’s passion for sports, music, trains, family, good friends and good times filled his life.

The following email posted by a close friend says it all (Thanks Pete!):

It is with the heaviest of hearts that we mourn the passing of one of our own. Our comrade Greg “Mailman” Hinton has lost the fight and succumbed to organ failure stemming from Lewy Body Dementia...or what many of us would call unnaturally, natural causes.

Mailman was our friend, our neighbor and a voice of reason.

He was a loving husband, father and grandfather. We all will miss him as a peer and a contemporary.

We will miss his integrity, his humility AND his idiosyncrasies.

We will miss his Bloody Mary’s, his taste in classic rock, his fondness for the ponies.

We will miss his fervent love of sports including the Yankee’s, fantasy football and all things. Valparaiso.

We will miss his grand prognosticating.

We will miss buying him a Coca Cola or a Budweiser, or bumming him a smoke.

We will miss his well-traveled stories and his hippy inclinations.

We will miss his wonderful command of the language and the lexicon that was mostly his own with phrases like “Stunning”, “Just like stealin”, and “Benchbuster”. They were his. They are ours now too.

It brings a smile to OUR face to hear that there was a knowing smile on HIS face, as the bugler played “First Call” for the Kentucky Derby the day before he passed and that his last sips of Budweiser came during the race itself. That day was also his daughter’s anniversary and that, according to jean, you could tell there was no way in hell he was going to let go and bring down the festivities that day.

No, he stubbornly held on just one more night.

Life is unfair, and the last six – eight months have been the ultimate reminder. We watched the man we knew deteriorate into something he was not...and know that now, he is in a better place.

We toast your life Mailman, unafraid to shed tear in your honor...my friend.

We are all better people for having known you...my friend.

Farewell indeed....my friend.

Memorial contributions may be made to: Lewy Body Dementia Association, 912 Killian Hill Road, S.W., Lilburn, GA 30047, 404-935-6444.
